William Halyburton, a member of WPPC who served as a US Navy Hosptial Corspman and who died on Okinawa in 1945 while giving aid to a wounded Marine is buried at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. Halyburton was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. A member of our church family, Atwood Boyd, visited his grave recently and shared photos that he took there.

The photos in this post include his headstone, his picture among the Medal of Honor recipients memorialized at the cemetery, a photo of the Honolulu Memorial around which the names of all those killed who have no known resting place are inscribed, and an interpretive sign about the history of the cemetery. The National Cemetery of the Pacific is informally known as “The Punchbowl” because it is set in the crater of an extinct volcano.

Many, many thanks to Atwood for sharing these photos with us!

Jesus says (Matthew 5:14-16): “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
Friends, how do we let our light shine? How do we avoid placing bushel baskets?
