The old Wilmington jail is the foundation for the Burgwin-Wright House

Did you know that the Burgwin-Wright house in downtown Wilmington was built in 1770 on top of the walls of Wilmington’s jail which had been built in 1740? Visitors to the house museum can see outdoor cells and a dungeon cell.

On Sunday we will be reading the story of Paul and Silas and their escape from jail in Acts 16. I am excited about the songs that our Ukulele Choir will be singing!

I love that Paul and Silas care about their jailer. The divine earthquake gives Paul and Silas a “Get Out of Jail Free” card, but they see that their jailer is in deep distress – he fears just how much he will be punished. They don’t run. They stop to care for him – even at risk to themselves.

So often in our society these days we see examples of people proclaiming that we should look out only for ourselves or people in our group. The core of Christianity is about caring for the other person, sharing God’s love and Jesus’ good news with them. That is what Paul and Silas stop to do.

Maybe we should, too?

Emile
