“Be Thou My Vision” is a poetic translation of an ancient Irish monastic prayer that some claim to date as early as the 6th Century, though our hymnal is a bit more cautious and only says “the 10th Century of before.” It is set to a traditional Irish folk tune.
The hymn is a prayer that God be our vision and our wisdom, that we be ever with God and that God be our King, that we seek neither riches nor empty praise but God alone, that we ultimately reach heaven’s joys. Put a bit more simply, it is a prayer that God be with us always and that we be with God always.
Friends, I have always chosen to have this hymn be part of the worship service in “big moments” in my life: ordination, wedding, the funerals of my parents. For me it is both a comfort and a challenge. It is hope and calling. It is Good News and marching orders for each day. I pray that God be my vision, our vision, always.
God bless you, and Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ☘️☘️☘️
