The Prophet’s Chamber

Winter Park Presbyterian Church has an apartment which we use as a space for ministry and mission.  This ministry of our Deacons seeks to give a family in transition a place to land and spend a year in a safe, very affordable location. The goal of the ministry is to help enable medium term residents to move out into longer-term housing once they are able.  We work with partner organizations to help find a family with such a need.

WPPC volunteers are needed when we renovate and repair the apartment between residents.   Recently we had such a transition.

Many, many thanks to Wayne, Bernice, and the many volunteers who cleaned, painted, repaired, and prepared the apartment for our next family of residents.

The name of the apartment is the “Prophet’s Chamber”.  The name comes from stories told by our former pastor, Rev. Dr. Matt Highfill, whose grandfather had a small cabin so named near his home for travelling guests.  He, in turn, took the name from a story in 2nd Kings about hospitality shown to the Prophet Elisha:

2nd Kings 4:8 One day Elisha was passing through Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to have a meal. So whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for a meal. 9She said to her husband, ‘Look, I am sure that this man who regularly passes our way is a holy man of God.10Let us make a small roof chamber with walls, and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that he can stay there whenever he comes to us.’ (New Revised Standard Version)

Here are a few photos of the apartment:
